Fishing in Gatlinburg is generally open to everyone with the proper license and permit—but there are a couple of special exceptions that cause confusion.
There is a designated children’s fishing area on the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River:
Typically limited to children 12 and under
Adults may assist but cannot fish themselves
Clearly marked along the river
💡 This is NOT the entire river—just a specific section
Gatlinburg often:
Stocks trout weekly (commonly Thursdays during peak season)
Sometimes coordinates stocking with youth-focused opportunities or heavier kid-friendly fishing access
However:👉 Adults are still allowed to fish most areas 👉 It’s not a “kids-only Thursday” rule across the river
Outside of the kids-only section:
Fishing is open to all licensed anglers
Requires:
Tennessee fishing license
Gatlinburg trout permit
Standard limits apply (typically 5 trout/day)
Most of the Little Pigeon River is open to all anglers with the proper license and permit. However, there is a small, clearly marked section on the West Prong that is reserved for children 12 and under.
